Art Column – 7/16/21

Welcome to the thirty-third edition of the Art Column, where our reporters (currently Yvng, Eskild, and Cracked) see and critique pieces in the #art channel and choose which to feature from members of the Rebel Penguin Federation.

By definition, “art” can be best described as…

“…the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”

Due to this, the Art Column’s purpose is to promote all types of art. This includes whether it’s digital or physical, something you can hear or something you can see, and even if it’s RPF related or not. However, please do also keep in mind due to so many members in our group, not everyone will get recognized each week. Nonetheless, we hope you enjoy our weekly gallery and keep creating!

Featured Artist

“How I Really Feel” by Toadimation, RPF Lieutenant Colonel

”Lately i’ve been exploring more soul and R&B music, and as I was exploring those genres I came across a song called ”Don’t You Know” by Durand Jones & The Indications. This song caught my attention and i really wanted to mess around with it, seeing if i could add more to make it sound better. And so I did that. It’s not much, but I added some percussion instruments, a bass line, and an organ. The organ doesn’t sound the best in my opinion but everybody has different opinions.”

Theme of the Week

In this segment, we will be announcing a different topic every week to challenge our artists and see what they come up with. If you would like to participate, post your art in #art with the hashtag we include here for a chance to be featured!

This week’s Theme of the Week was Pride!

“Bi Flag Rudolph” by RedNosedLugia, RPF Private

”Rudolph proudly wearing the colors of the bi flag”

“Wild Pride” by Nuggy, RPF Colonel

”Dragons are one of my top favorite creatures of fantasy. So, when sitting and deciding what to draw for a craft fair/etc, during pride month, I wasn’t too surprised of my choice that came to me! I mean, how cool is the idea of a rainbow dragon, right!? A symbolism of pride showing through such an amazing creature. I procrastinated, at first, not knowing how to start it. After some look ups of references and gaining inspiration, I got to work! It took me a few days to draw. Staying up all night trying out different things and messing with different brushes to color this piece on that one night, after having finished the drawing aspect of it a few days before, turned out to be well worth it in the end! I really wanted it to capture the emotions that come with being seen as, so called, ‘different’. A beautiful, colorful, being. It all came down to this; Wild, pride, and proud of it.”

“Loom band pride monkeys” by Yoshi, RPF Scout Medic

”Thought i could make use of some old loom bands i had from 2014ish, and realised i could make some monkeys that had the colours of some pride flags!”

“Rainy Bi-Day” by Missy, RPF Lieutenant

”I saw a piece similar to this on the internet and was like lets take a spin on it so I made it at first with just pink colors then recolored it for pride month to be based off the bisexual flag. I thought it was also super fitting there was a rain umbrella because rain brings rainbows :)”

“Pride Axion” by Skyline Lazer, RPF Scout Medic

”Since Sonic himself supports Pride Day as shown from Sega Hardlight (A company who is in charge of Sonic Dash), I have decided to draw my Sonic OC, Axion, holding a Pride Flag, while wearing a pair of Pride Shoes. Every day is Pride Day folks.”

Thank you to everyone who submitted art!

Next week’s Theme of the Week is… Abstract! By definition, abstract means art that does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of a visual reality but instead uses shapes, colors, forms, and gestural marks to achieve its effect. So use your creative Rebels in this one and create something unique and imaginative. Make sure to put #rpfacabstract in the caption when you post your work if you would like to be featured here next week! Don’t forget: art includes drawings, music, photography, paintings, and more!

All art presented was given permission by their creators to be included in this post. Never steal or take credit for another person’s work!

Thanks for reading!
