Hey there, Rebels! We are back with another edition of the Pet Column, where Citrus, Marcasite Meg, Miggy, and Morgan show off the amazing pets of RPF! Keep posting pics of your precious friends in our #pets channel for the chance to be interviewed for our next column, and show off your lovely animals! Let’s meet today’s featured pets!
Alice
Names: Chiri (orange and white) and Mañita
Age: Chiri is 3.5 years old, Mañita is 2.5 years old
Breed: Chiri is Half Persian, half domestic shorthair, Mañita is a Domestic Shorthair (diluted Calico).
Favourite Snack: Chiri loves fish and tomatoes, Mañita loves anything, especially salmon churu.
Meg: How did you get your cats?
Alice: Chiri we saw a post on Instagram looking for adoptees when he was like a month old, because they were in an unsafe situation, and he (back then, “she”) looked so sad and helpless that we had to bring “her” in. Mañita we found half a block from our house, she was hurt and sooo thin, we ended up bringing her home that same day, and so she stayed.
Meg: Where did their names come from?
Alice: Chiro comes from Chirimoya Alegre, a dish that’s orange juice and custard apple (the name of the dish is literally “Happy custard apple”). His fur colours reminded us of the dish so we went for it. Mañita comes from Alimaña (aka vermin) so I wouldn’t “fall in love with her”… clearly that didn’t work LOL. So she ended with a cute, affectionate version of her original “totally not a name”.
Meg: Do they have any favourite toys?
Alice: Mañita’s favourite toy is our hair (me and my husband’s), she loves to play with it, so she jumps on our shoulders and she starts entangling herself in it HAHA. Chiri likes a particular owl plushie I own, so he carries it around, plays fetch with it, etc.
Meg: If your cats could have any superpowers what would you think they’d be?
Alice: Mañita would definitely have teleporting powers, she’s definitely fast and appears out of nowhere LOL. Chiri on the other hand would probably have super strength, that cat is definitely stronger than me.
Thank you, Alice, for interviewing with Meg!
Azuslaywa
Name: Willow
Age: 2 years
Breed: Redbone Coonhound
Favourite Snack: Mr. Softie Ice Cream
Gwen: I know you said her name came from the Taylor Swift song “Willow” but was there any special reason why this name stuck out to you?
Azu: Her name at the shelter was Dory, and it just wasn’t seeming to be a good fit for her. She never really even responded to it. We happened to be watching the Eras Tour movie while we were talking about a new name for her and “Willow” happened to be on! I thought the name fit her well so I tried calling her that, and she responded!
Gwen: Do you have a favourite memory or story with Willow?
Azu: There’s so many fun memories and stories about her, but I think my overall favourite is how far she’s come! When we first got her, it was clear from the second we took her home that she had never even been in a house before. She thought the TV was weird, didn’t understand phones, and was afraid of the sliding door and garage. We took her for a small road trip once and, when we reached the countryside and let her our for a break, she panicked and pulled to get back into the car. From there, we realised there’s a high state she was one of many hounds in our state that get abandoned for not being “good enough”, so we worked hard to teach her to trust us and understand that she’s not going anywhere without one or both of us. Watching her go from a quiet dog who was scared of her own shadow to a playful, VERY vocal, and cuddlebug of a dog has been my favourite thing in the world! And with her confidence, she’s also shown just how incredibly smart she is and we love watching her mind work!
Gwen: If you could travel anywhere with her, where would you go?
Azu: Honestly, I’d love to take her to an open field just for us! She loves to run and it’s a bit hard for her to where we live, but I know she’d LOVE to be able to run and fetch her toys! And if that field had an agility course? She’d have even more fun being able to figure out how to overcome each obstacle.
Gwen: Does she have any favourite toys?
Azu: Oh 100% her favourite toys are her squeaky chickens! She has three chickens, two are the same chicken after she flattened the first. She loves throwing them around (though sometimes she likes to throw them at us) and she LOVES coming up so we can slap the chicken out of her mouth. Unfortunately she squeaks them really loud, so subtitles are usually on our TV as well as high volume, but she loves it.
Gwen: If she could have a magical ability, what would it be and why?
Azu: Honestly, I think she would be able to heal! She’s always so concerned when we are sick or injured, especially after I hurt my ankle this weekend. All she wants to do is sniff us so she can learn what’s wrong and, if she could, I know she’d do anything she could to help us heal!
Thank you, Azu, for interviewing with Gwen!
Crunch
Name: Link (left) & Cyrus (right)
Age: Link is 2 years old, Cyrus is 1 year old
Breed: Link is Brown/Black, Cyrus is Cream
Favourite Snack: Fancy Feast wet food, tuna, the occasional shredded cheese.
Miggy: How did you get Link and Cyrus?
Crunch: Link – So in 2024, I was living in a new state away from my family, and I had a really rough day at a new job. That night, I heard tiny little mews outside our front door. When we opened the door to check, he stumbled in and immediately made himself at home. He was pretty sick and tiny, and the vet said we probably saved his life :’) When my relationship at the time ended and I moved back to my home state, my ex’s mom actually took a flight to bring him to me! He’s my first cat ever, and I’d like to think I manifested him.
Cyrus – Almost a year after Link and I reunited, my mom decided she also wanted a little fur baby of her own. We found a lady on Facebook who was trying to find homes for the babies her cat gave birth to. And the rest is history 🙂
Miggy: How were their names chosen?
Crunch: Link – When we first took him in, I assumed he was a girl, so his name was originally Zelda. We took him to the vet and found out he was a boy, and I was like “Oh cool, his name can just be Link then!” I’m also a big Rhett & Link fan so it doubly worked out.
Cyrus – We brainstormed for a while but during a watch of the show Scandal, I was inspired by one of the characters’ names, and we decided to craft a “full name” out of the characters we liked. Cyrus [Beene], Fitzgerald [Grant], [David] Rosen. We like to call his full name whenever he gets in trouble lolol.
Miggy: What does their relationship look like? Would you say they’re a bonded pair?
Crunch: They are super bonded. They love to nap next to each other, get into mischief together. Sometimes, one will be the lookout while the other one gets into something they shouldn’t. They do wrestle a lot and Cyrus is always starting drama. But they love each other so so much.
Miggy: If these two could have any super power imaginable, what do you think it would be?
Crunch: Mind control, easy. If they could get me to food them or open the patio door for them whenever they wanted, they would definitely take any opportunity.
Miggy: Do you have a favourite memory of them? Either together or separately.
Crunch: Honestly, I love any moment I can watch them (playfully) wrestle. It’s literally like they’re putting on a WWE match. I’ll also always look back fondly on the first nights of having them, they were so tinyyy. Or any time I’ve been sick/in pain and they chose to lay next to me instead of their usual spots :’)
Thank you, Crunch, for interviewing with Miggy!
That’s it for this edition! Thank you so much to the three lovely people who took the time to be interviewed about their beloved friends!
